Ceiling fans and ceiling fan light kits

Energy Efficiency Regulations

Regulatory definition

Ceiling fan, a non-portable device that is suspended from a ceiling for circulating air via the rotation of fan blades.

It does not include

  • a ceiling fan if the plane of rotation of the fan blades is greater than 45 degrees from horizontal
  • a centrifugal ceiling fan
  • a belt-driven ceiling fan
  • an oscillating ceiling fan and
  • a ceiling fan with a maximum rotational speed of 90 RPM and a maximum airflow of 52.1 cubic metres/minute (1840 cubic feet/minute)

For the purposes of these Regulations, a ceiling fan is one of the following types:

  • very small diameter
  • standard
  • hugger
  • high-speed small-diameter or
  • large-diameter

Ceiling fan light kit, equipment that is designed to provide light from a ceiling fan and that is:

  • integral to the fan before its retail sale, or
  • attachable to the fan after its retail sale

Compliance date

Ceiling fans manufactured on or after January 21, 2020

Ceiling fan light kits manufactured on or after January 1, 2010

For models manufactured prior, refer to the Regulations

Energy efficiency regulations by province

Some provinces also have their own energy efficiency regulations for many of the federally regulated products – find out which ones!

Energy efficiency standard

Energy performance standard for ceiling fans

Product type Minimum efficiency
(CFM/W)
Very small-diameter (VSD)   D ≤ 12 in 21
Very small-diameter (VSD)    D > 12 in 3.16 D −17.04
Standard 0.65 D + 38.03
Hugger 0.29 D + 34.46
High-speed small-diameter (HSSD) 4.16 D + 0.02
Large-diameter*

D = ceiling fan's blade span/diameter, in inches
CFM = cubic feet per minute
W = watts
*Large-diameter ceiling fans are regulated with no minimum energy performance standard (MEPS). They are subject to testing, verification, and reporting requirements.

Energy performance standard for ceiling fan light kits (CFLKs)
Product type Lumens Energy efficiency standard
CFLKs manufactured on or after January 1, 2010 and before January 7, 2019 N/A Total power for lighting ≤ 190 W
CFLKs manufactured on or after January 7, 2019, that have at least one socket, that are not packaged with a lamp for each socket and that do not have integrated solid-state lighting circuitry N/A Total power for lighting ≤ 70 W [this may be achieved with maximum wattage markings on each socket or via a power-limiting device]
CFLKs manufactured on or after January 7, 2019, that have at least one socket, that are packaged with a lamp for each socket, but that do not have integrated solid-state lighting circuitry <120 lm Lighting efficacy ≥ 50 lm/W
CFLKs manufactured on or after January 7, 2019, that have integrated solid-state lighting circuitry
CFLKs manufactured on or after January 7, 2019, that have at least one socket, that are packaged with a lamp for each socket, but that do not have integrated solid-state lighting circuitry ≥120 lm Lighting efficacy ≥ (74.0−29.42 × 0.9983lumens) lm/W
CFLKs manufactured on or after January 7, 2019, that have integrated solid-state lighting circuitry

W = watts
lm = lumens

Use the nominal lumen output for each basic model of lamp packaged with the basic model of CFLK or each basic model of integrated SSL in the CFLK basic model to determine the applicable standard.
