Single package vertical air conditioners and heat pumps

Energy Efficiency Regulations

Regulatory definition

Single package vertical air-conditioner, a single package commercial air conditioner that is air-cooled and encased, with or without heating capability but not a heat pump.

Single package vertical heat pump, a single package commercial heat pump that is air-cooled, encased and uses reverse cycle refrigeration as its primary heat source. The major components of both are arranged vertically and are intended for mounting through, or on either side of, an exterior wall.

Compliance date

Manufactured on or after January 1, 2011

For models manufactured prior, refer to the Regulations

Testing standard

CSA C746-17

Energy efficiency regulations by province

Some provinces also have their own energy efficiency regulations for many of the federally regulated products – find out which ones!

Energy efficiency standard

Energy performance Levels standard for single package vertical air conditioners (SPVAC) and heat pumps (SPVHP)
Product type Size Minimum efficiency requirement
SPVAC and SPVHP <19 kW (65,000 Btu/h) EER = ≥ 11.0
≥ 19 kW (65,000 Btu/h) and < 39.5 kW (135,000 Btu/h) EER = ≥ 10.0
≥ 39.5 kW (135,000 Btu/h) and < 70 kW (240,000 Btu/h) EER = ≥ 10.0
SPVHP < 19 kW (65,000 Btu/h) COP = ≥ 3.3
≥ 19 kW (65,000 Btu/h) and < 39.5 kW (135,000 Btu/h) COP = ≥ 3.0
≥ 39.5 kW (135,000 Btu/h) and < 70 kW (240,000 Btu/h) COP = ≥ 3.0

COP = Coefficient of performance
EER = Energy efficiency ratio
Btu/h = British thermal units per hour
kW = kilowatts
