Natural Resources Canada relies on data from building energy use surveys conducted by Statistics Canada: specifically, the Survey of Commercial and Institutional Energy Use (SCIEU) and the Survey of Energy Consumption of Arenas (SECA). Data from these surveys supports federal and provincial program and policy development intended to increase the energy efficiency of the Canadian commercial and institutional buildings sector.
The data also forms the basis of the 1-100 performance scores used in Natural Resources Canada’s Canadian adaptation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager® energy benchmarking system. Industry associations, building managers and business owners can review data for similar buildings and compare it to their own energy consumption. Energy specialists and consumers can also learn more about buildings' consumption patterns.
Survey of Commercial and Institutional Energy Use
The Survey of Commercial and Institutional Energy Use (SCIEU) 2014 produces statistical estimates of energy use for 9 building types: office, medical office, nursing care facility, warehouse, elementary/secondary school, hotel/motel, hospital, food/beverage store and non-food retail. SCIEU first collected data for calendar year 2009 and then for calendar year 2014. SCIEU will next be updated for the 2019 calendar year.
Survey of Energy Consumption of Arenas
As a supplement to SCIEU, Natural Resources Canada worked with Statistics Canada to collect new information on energy consumption of Canadian arenas. Statistical estimates of energy use led to the establishment of baseline data, and to the development of a 1-100 ENERGY STAR energy benchmarking performance score for ice/curling rinks.
