2020 ENERGY STAR® CANADA AWARDS

Samsung Electronics Canada is a global manufacturer of home appliances, consumer electronics and mobile communications. An ENERGY STAR Canada Participant since 2003, Samsung develops eco-friendly solutions and proudly promotes its products as among the most energy efficient options available for consumers and businesses. For Samsung, ENERGY STAR is a badge they are proud to wear!

Key 2019 accomplishments include:

  • Increased number of ENERGY STAR certified appliance models for sale in Canada by 24 percent over previous year.
  • ENERGY STAR certified product portfolio includes 100 percent of dishwashers, 87 percent of refrigerators, 95 percent of clothes washers, and 45 percent of clothes dryers.
  • Partnered with BC Hydro for the last 5 years on spring and fall rebate programs for purchase of ENERGY STAR certified products. The program included an extensive digital marketing campaign resulting in over 14 million impressions for the fall campaign alone.
  • Featured ENERGY STAR certified products at the Vancouver Fall Home Show attended by over 34,000 participants.
  • Increased ENERGY STAR communications via multi-channel education program: ENERGY STAR training programs targeted at over 200 Samsung internal staff members; in-store field training of over 13,000 retailers; total of 110 ENERGY STAR mentions on the Samsung website resulting in over 1.2 million page visits.

This is Samsung Electronics Canada’s tenth ENERGY STAR Canada award: Sustained Excellence (2020); Appliance Manufacturer of the Year (2017, 2018, 2019); Electronics Manufacturer of the Year (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018); “ENERGY STAR Most Efficient” Promoter of the Year (2015); Collaborative Initiative of the Year (2012).

LG Electronics Canada Inc.
2020 ENERGY STAR® CANADA AWARDS

LG Electronics is a global innovator in technology and manufacturing, with more than 117 operations around the world. In Canada, LG offers a wide range of consumer electronics, home appliances, mobile communications, air solutions, and information display products. LG’s focus on environmental sustainability demonstrates their dedication to creating a better life for their consumers by delivering energy saving innovations that blend technology and style.

Key 2019 accomplishments include:

  • LG increased the number of its sustainable home appliance model offerings by 10 percent as a result of new product innovations available to the Canadian market.
  • Collectively, over 15 million media impressions promoting LG's ENERGY STAR certified products:
    • Partnered with a major retailer to promote an ENERGY STAR certified smart home digital series featuring a national tech influencer resulting in 500,000+  impressions. 
    • Promoted LG ENERGY STAR certified dehumidifier on TV media tour resulting in more than 1 million impressions.
    • Proactively promoted the Ontario ENERGY STAR Savings Rebate program through influencer blog posts, paid social posts, in-store POP materials, and digital channels. 
    • Partnered with a celebrity chef and LG Home Appliance Ambassador, who hosted a series of events with influencers, bloggers and media to feature the benefits of using LG's ENERGY STAR certified appliances.
  • Comprehensive retail training programs delivered through a variety of formats, including in-store individual and group training, as well as web and application training with a total reach of over 3,000 representatives trained on the benefits of ENERGY STAR.

This is LG Electronics Canada Inc.’s second ENERGY STAR Canada award: Appliances Manufacturer of the Year (2020); Heating and Cooling Equipment Manufacturer of the Year (2016).

Ricoh Canada Inc.
2020 ENERGY STAR® CANADA AWARDS

Headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario, Ricoh Canada Inc. is a global technology company specializing in document workflow solutions, office and commercial printing and imaging equipment, audiovisual collaboration technologies, and IT services.  Ricoh strives for “practical” energy performance to achieve ENERGY STAR certification while maintaining ease of use for consumers. Ricoh’s commitment to environmental conservation has been woven into the company’s manufacturing, logistics, product use and final disposal process since 1976.

Key 2019 accomplishments include:

  • Certified 100 percent of eligible models.
  • Increased market penetration of ENERGY STAR certified products in Canada by 14 percent over 2018.
  • Participated in Natural Resources Canada’s “12 Days of ENERGY STAR” holiday social media campaign for the second consecutive year resulting in heavy social media coverage.
  • Promotion of ENERGY STAR through a broad range of measures: at least 100 references on website generating over 30,000 views; customer collateral; sales presentations; environmental training sessions; Earth Week presentations; new sales rep training; product brochures, social media posts, etc.
  • Continued promotion of ENERGY STAR through Eco Excellence program to dealer partners.

This is Ricoh Canada Inc.’s second ENERGY STAR Canada award: Electronics Manufacturer of the Year (2019, 2020).

Manufacturer of the year—commercial products—2020

QBD Cooling Systems Inc.
2020 ENERGY STAR® CANADA AWARDS

Established in 1981, QBD is a leading manufacturer of commercial refrigeration products in Canada. The company is committed to creating energy efficient equipment that meets ENERGY STAR specifications, and that ultimately help end users reduce their energy bills, save money, and protect the planet.

Key 2019 accomplishments include:

  • 70 percent more ENERGY STAR  certified products in 2019 compared to 2018
  • Active engagement with industry leaders, suppliers and research institutes to further improve the energy efficiency of refrigeration systems resulted in the development of new products. These new products are on average 50 percent more energy efficient compared with previous generation models.
  • Promotion and marketing efforts leading to 99 percent sales of HC hydrocarbon- based ENERGY STAR certified equipment.
  • Commitment to promote and create more awareness about ENERGY STAR benefits through its new HC series coolers and to keep innovating to push the boundaries even further.

This is QBD Cooling System Inc.’s third ENERGY STAR Canada award: Commercial Products Manufacturer of the Year (2017, 2018, 2020)

Manufacturer of the year—windows and doors—2020

All Weather Windows
2020 ENERGY STAR® CANADA AWARDS

Operating for over 40 years, All Weather Windows is Canada's largest privately owned window and door manufacturer. With customer solution centres in seven cities, close to 800 dealers across Western Canada, and a leading-edge manufacturing plant in Edmonton, the company produces a full range of energy efficient and sustainable window and door products built for Canadian weather. 

Key 2019 accomplishments include:

  • Participated in steering committee meetings for the Pan Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change providing consultation on how energy efficient product development can contribute to help Canada meet emission reduction targets.
  • In 2019, over 550,000 ENERGY STAR certified models available in Canada with over 2,500 designated as ENERGY STAR Most Efficient 2019.
  • Promotion of ENERGY STAR through all of promotional channels including the organization’s website (almost 5000 page views), social media (over 100,000 impressions), collateral material, direct mail (40,000 pieces sent), catalogues, digital screens, in-store signage/displays and vehicle decals.

This is All Weather Windows’s sixth ENERGY STAR Canada award: Windows and Doors Manufacturer of the Year (2010, 2011, 2012, 2015); Participant of the Year (2012); Sustained Excellence (2018).

Manufacturer of the Year—heating and cooling equipment—2020

Navien, Inc.
2020 ENERGY STAR® CANADA AWARDS

Navien, Inc. is a leader in condensing technology, specifically water heaters and boilers. The company name is derived from three words: Navigator / Energy / Environment, with a mission to provide customers with the ultimate comfortable living environment through energy efficient products by using innovative technology to create a healthier environment for our future generations.

Key 2019 accomplishments include:

  • Increased the number of ENERGY STAR models for sale in Canada by 25percent in 2019 over 2018.
  • Increased the visibility and awareness of the ENERGY STAR symbol and its meaning through various face-to-face training opportunities, including factory tour training, trade events, and over 50 training sessions.
  • Doubled ENERGY STAR product visibility through website visits and social media presence from 2019 over 2018.

This is Navien Inc.’s first ENERGY STAR Canada award.

Manufacturer of the year—lighting—2020

L’Image Home Products Inc.
2020 ENERGY STAR® CANADA AWARDS

Founded in 1998, Montréal-based L’Image Home Products (LHP) designs, develops, and manufactures a wide range of electrical products with a focus on lighting products. LHP works to promote ENERGY STAR while raising the bar on product innovation and inventive promotion techniques.

Key 2019 accomplishments include: 

  • Increased visibility of the ENERGY STAR brand by reaching more than 6,000 followers on four different social media platforms with a combined total of almost 117,000 impressions.
  • Increased product line by 26 new ENERGY STAR products, more than doubling numbers from 2018.
  • Promoted ENERGY STAR at four  industry events including the Association of Energy Service Professionals (AESP) conference, the Home Hardware Show, the National Hardware Show, and the ENERGY STAR Partner meeting, with a combined reach of more than 40,000 participants.
  • Welcomed 27 new hires to help expand utility business and ENERGY STAR focus within the company.

This is L’Image Home Products Inc.’s fourth ENERGY STAR Canada award: Lighting Manufacturer of the Year (2016, 2018, 2019, 2020).

Retailer of the year—2020

The Home Depot Canada
2020 ENERGY STAR® CANADA AWARDS

An ENERGY STAR Canada Participant since 2001, The Home Depot Canada is one of the country’s biggest home improvement retailers with 182 stores across the country. Through its commitment to sustainability, the company recognizes ENERGY STAR as a trusted brand whose familiar symbol lends credibility to the store’s energy-efficient products.

Key 2019 accomplishments include:

  • Participated in the Ontario Energy Savings Rebate Program and provided instant rebates on ENERGY STAR certified appliances, water heaters, and smart thermostats. This resulted in a significant increase of unit sales of ENERGY STAR certified appliances compared to 2018.
  • Launched the Enbridge Smart Thermostat Program for Enbridge Gas customers that provided instant rebates on ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostats. This resulted in increased unit sales of ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostats.
  • Worked with vendors and utility partners across Canada to increase uptake on ENERGY STAR certified products through instant rebate programs as well as online rebate programs.
  • Increased the number of ENERGY STAR certified products for sale in Canada by 20 percent over 2018.

This is The Home Depot Canada’s twelfth ENERGY STAR Canada award: National Retailer of the Year (2004, 2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020); Sustained Excellence (2012); Advocate of the Year (2005).

2020 ENERGY STAR® CANADA AWARDS
takeCHARGE (Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro)

A joint initiative between Newfoundland Power and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, takeCHARGE combines the expertise and customer reach of Newfoundland and Labrador’s two electricity utilities. With more than 50,000 program participants, the takeCHARGE partnership works to bring energy efficiency awareness and rebate programs to everyone in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Key 2019 accomplishments include:

  • Offered at-the-cash rebates on a variety of ENERGY STAR certified products at 76 retail locations.
  • Provided a total of $842,244 in incentives on approximately 386,640 ENERGY STAR certified products.
  • Held over 170 in store events at participating retailers to promote ENERGY STAR certified products during the Instant Rebate spring and fall campaigns.
  • Launched the Make the Switch LED giveaway that provided 5,000 ENERGY STAR certified LED bulbs to 25 non-profit organizations and charities across the province. Hockey fans also scored ENERGY STAR certified light bulbs during Energy Efficiency Week at a Newfoundland Growlers hockey game.
  • takeCHARGE staff gave presentations about energy conservation and ENERGY STAR certified products to 3,179 students at schools across Newfoundland and Labrador for the Kids-In-Charge School Program.

This is takeCHARGE’s first and second ENERGY STAR Canada award.

Energy Efficiency Program Administrator of the year—2020

Arctic Energy Alliance
2020 ENERGY STAR® CANADA AWARDS

The Arctic Energy Alliance (AEA) was formed to consolidate the activities of a number of organizations with an interest in energy related maters. The AEA helps communities, consumers, producers, regulators and policymakers work together to reduce costs and environmental impacts of energy and utility services in the Northwest Territories.

Key 2019 accomplishments include:

  • Distributed 777 rebates for ENERGY STAR certified products worth more than $210,000—in a jurisdiction of only 40,000 people. This was up from 327 ENERGY STAR related rebates in 2018.
  • Formed a partnership with the North West Company to offer point-of-sale rebates in Northern and NorthMart stores on ENERGY STAR certified refrigerators, washers and chest freezers, which accounted for 18percent of the AEA’s total ENERGY STAR related rebates.
  • Visited 27 out of 33 communities in the Northwest Territories and promoted ENERGY STAR certified products to the residents. Many of these communities are only accessible by air or temporary winter road.
  • Promoted ENERGY STAR certified appliances, lighting, HVAC and windows to 61 homeowners while conducting EnerGuide home energy evaluations.

This is the Arctic Energy Alliance’s first ENERGY STAR Canada award.

Advocate of the year—2020

efficiencyPEI
2020 ENERGY STAR® CANADA AWARDS

The Government of Prince Edward Island founded efficiencyPEI in 2008 in an effort to increase energy efficiency across the province. The organization is committed to providing Islanders with advice and programs that will promote sustainable energy use and reinforce the importance of sound energy management for the economic, social and environmental well-being of Island residents and businesses.

Key 2019 accomplishments include:

  • Completed two instant savings campaigns, which provided in-store rebates on ENERGY STAR certified products. Over 77,000 units were rebated in 2019, resulting in 2.89 gigawatt hours of energy savings.
  • Provided 514 ENERGY STAR certified products to low income islanders as part of the Winter Warming Program.
  • Increased participation in the Home Comfort program from 418 in 2018 to 1337 in 2019. This program provided energy efficient retrofits to eligible low income clients, which included ENERGY STAR certified LED bulbs and other ENERGY STAR certified equipment.
  • Increased participation in the Home Insulation program by 160percent over the previous year. This program provided rebates on ENERGY STAR certified Zone 3 windows & doors, as well as insulation.
  • Collaborated with Abegweit First Nation to provide free energy audits, which resulted in ENERGY STAR certified equipment upgrades to approximately 100 homes.

This is efficiencyPEI’s third ENERGY STAR Canada award: Energy Efficiency Program Administrator of the year (2019); Advocate of the year (2018, 2020).

Promoter of the year—ENERGY STAR Most Efficient—2020

Pollard Windows & Doors
2020 ENERGY STAR® CANADA AWARDS

Located in Burlington, Ontario, Pollard Windows & Doors has been designing, developing and manufacturing windows and doors for over 70 years. Pollard Windows & Doors is strongly committed to ENERGY STAR evidenced in product improvements, performance enhancements and marketing plans.

Key 2019 accomplishments include:

  • Dramatically increased the amount of ENERGY STAR certified products available from 256 to 705 – due in large part to the introduction of multiple glazing options – with over 200 products labelled as ENERGY STAR Most Efficient in 2019.
  • Provided technical expertise to building officials and builders regarding the requirements and benefits of ENERGY STAR products.
  • Ongoing promotion of ENERGY STAR through print, television and social media, featuring HGTV host Scott McGillivray.
  • Worked to secure a partnership with Cardinal Glass in 2018 with manufacturing benefits realized over 2019.

This is Pollard Windows & Doors first ENERGY STAR Canada award.

Recruit of the year—2020

Stirling Marathon
2020 ENERGY STAR® CANADA AWARDS

Headquartered in Guelph, Ontario, Stirling Marathon is a manufacturer of specialty home appliances in North America, including a full line of chest and upright freezers, compact and mid-sized refrigerators, electric ranges and built-in wine and beverage coolers, all under the Marathon and Epic brands. A Canadian family-owned organization with a passion to develop, design and manufacture appliances with energy efficiency at the forefront.

Key 2019 accomplishments include:

  • Increased number of ENERGY STAR certified products year over year with 84 percent of product line certified in 2019.
  • Three products certified as ENERGY STAR Most Efficient 2019.
  • Dedicated to supporting Canadian independent appliance retailers through financing buying groups and promoting ENERGY STAR certified products and messaging to dealers.
  • Education and training for internal staff and appliance retailers to highlight benefits of ENERGY STAR product line to benefit end consumers.

This is Stirling Marathon’s first ENERGY STAR Canada award.

Special Recognition—2020

Lowe’s Canada
2020 ENERGY STAR® CANADA AWARDS

Lowe’s Canada has received the ENERGY STAR Canada Special Recognition Award for excellence in energy efficiency and sustainability. As a leading home improvement retailer in the country, operating or servicing over 470 stores under different banners, Lowe’s Canada acknowledges having a role to play in improving the environmental performance of the construction and home improvement industries in Canada. As such, the company offers a wide range of ECO products characterized by a smaller environmental footprint, including hundreds of ENERGY STAR certified products, in all its Lowe's, RONA, and Reno-Depot corporate and participating dealer stores.

Key 2019 accomplishments include:

  • Participated in energy savings rebate programs in Ontario and British Columbia and provided instant rebates on ENERGY STAR certified products. This resulted in the sale of thousands of ENERGY STAR certified products.
  • Promoted ENERGY STAR certified products in stores, in flyers, online, and through sponsored social media posts to encourage consumers to reduce their energy consumption.
  • Expanded the ENERGY STAR certified product assortment, adding a little over 100 new models for sale in Canada in 2019.

This is Lowe’s Canada’s first ENERGY STAR Canada award.

ENERGY STAR Awards for New Homes

Builder of the year—Small size—2020

Terra View Custom Homes Ltd.
2020 ENERGY STAR® CANADA AWARDS

Since 1991, Terra View Homes has established a team of highly qualified professionals with a combined 200 years in the home building industry. Terra View Homes has continuously led by example by incorporating sustainable and eco-friendly practices into every home. For almost two decades, Terra View Homes has pioneered green homebuilding practices in Canada. In 2006, they were one of the first of the Guelph area homebuilders to build exclusively ENERGY STAR homes. Their team works closely with each purchaser to ensure that their home is custom built to their tastes and tailor-made to meet their family’s needs.

Noteworthy activities and accomplishments in 2019:

  • Built 33 ENERGY STAR houses that are beyond the ENERGY STAR standards. This is over fifteen times more than in 2018.
  • Trained over 70 people, in addition to their staff, about building “green”.
  • Featured the ENERGY STAR logo and information on promotional materials, and their website.
  • Featured green living information via promotional materials, a blog and social media.

This is Terra View Custom Homes Ltd.’s first ENERGY STAR Canada award.

Builder of the year—Mid-size—2020

Doug Tarry Homes
2020 ENERGY STAR® CANADA AWARDS

Doug Tarry Homes have been committed to their customers in St. Thomas, Ontario and the surrounding areas since 1954. They proudly build with the environment and community in mind. Every Doug Tarry Home is a HYBRID Home built to exceed ENERGY STAR requirements and Net Zero Ready with an option to complete to Net Zero.

Noteworthy activities and accomplishments in 2019:

  • Built over 12 percent more homes than in 2018.
  • As of January 1st, 2019, Doug Tarry Homes announced that every home would be built to Net Zero Ready specification.
  • Used the Try Recycling Canvas Bin System to recycle waste materials from the construction site and divert it from local landfills.
  • ENERGY STAR requires less than 2.5 air changes per hour (ACH); Doug Tarry Homes averages 0.76 ACH.
  • Received many accolades through awards and recognitions throughout their community and building industry.

  • Built over 15 percent more ENERGY STAR houses than in 2018.
  • Trained over 25 tradespeople, in addition to their staff, about their ENERGY STAR building package.
  • Featured the ENERGY STAR logo and information on promotional materials, video, model homes, sales office and more.
