For over a decade, Sears Canada has demonstrated its continued leadership in protecting the environment through its committed support of the ENERGY STAR Canada brand. With 95 corporate stores, 125 dealer locations and more than 1200 catalogue desks, combined with online and mobile channels, Sears Canada makes more than 700 ENERGY STAR certified products accessible to all Canadians.

Noteworthy activities and accomplishments since they joined in 2001:

  • Consistently promoted a wide selection of ENERGY STAR certified products, including the addition of the ENERGY STAR Most Efficient product line.
  • Constantly provided prominent visibility of the ENERGY STAR symbol in store, on its website, and in promotional materials, contributing to increased ENERGY STAR brand awareness in Canada and resulting in an increase of ENERGY STAR certified products available by 42% year over year.
  • Maintained and expanded employee training that focuses on communicating the benefits of purchasing ENERGY STAR certified products to consumers.
  • Continuously partnered with utilities and efficiency program administrators to enable customers to take advantage of ENERGY STAR rebates and incentives.

Sears Canada has won ten ENERGY STAR awards: Sustained Excellence (2011, 2017); Retailer of the Year (2003, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013); Participant of the Year (2005).

Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care

For 17 years, the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care has helped those working in health care facilities, non-governmental and governmental organizations, individuals, students and businesses to share green health care best practices and to become better equipped to deal with the growing demands placed upon them to be environmentally responsible.

Noteworthy activities and accomplishments in 2016:

  • Articles in seven issues of the Canadian Green Health Care Digest promoting ENERGY STAR to Canadian and international readership with an approximate reach of 4500 per issue.
  • Recommended ENERGY STAR in more than 20 building energy assessments, including community hospitals, First Nations and remote northern health facilities.
  • Promoted ENERGY STAR at national and provincial conferences and trade shows, webinars, teleconferences, stakeholder events and in media articles.
  • Involved in an ongoing study of medical imaging devices as potential equipment category eligible for ENERGY STAR certification.

This is the Canadian Coalition for Green Health Care’s second ENERGY STAR award: Advocate of the Year (2015).

Saint John Energy

Saint John Energy is the municipal electrical utility in Saint John, NB, that focuses on the provision of outstanding value to its stakeholders. The utility is accountable to its 36,500 residential, commercial and industrial customers for reliable service at rates that are among the lowest in the region.

Noteworthy activities and accomplishments in 2016:

  • Launched an ENERGY STAR Most Efficient promotional campaign using Twitter, its website and on-bill advertising, to promote a mini split ductless heat pump rental program, the first of its kind in Canada.
  • Promotion of ENERGY STAR Most Efficient Fujitsu heat pumps resulted in the installation of over 1600 units – 1400 units more than the original target for 2016.

This is Saint John Energy’s first ENERGY STAR award.

Manitoba Hydro

Manitoba Hydro is the province’s major energy utility, providing service to more than 567,000 electricity and 275,000 natural gas customers. The utility says that promoting ENERGY STAR certified products is critical to its energy conservation and sustainability goals.

Noteworthy activities and accomplishments in 2016:

  • Launched spring and fall retailer rebate campaigns, providing incentives for a variety of ENERGY STAR certified products and achieved in-year energy and demand savings of 9.91 GWh.
  • Became the first Canadian utility to create a program to automatically upload historical and ongoing energy consumption data into ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager tool and offer this free service to the public.
  • Launched the Manitoba Race to Reduce initiative, resulting in owners of commercial buildings totaling over 6 million square feet – the equivalent of 5,000 residential homes – to benchmark performance using ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager®.
  • Launched the Power Smart LED education campaign which promotes ENERGY STAR certified LED products to customers.
  • Expanded the Power Smart Shops program to upgrade lighting in small Manitoba businesses to certified ENERGY STAR LEDs.
  • Manitoba Hydro’s “Savings in Every Corner” campaign provided homeowners with rebates on ENERGY STAR certified products at 160 participating retailer locations throughout the province. In addition to the popular LED bulbs, Manitoba Hydro also offered rebates on select ENERGY STAR certified appliances.

Manitoba Hydro has won seven ENERGY STAR awards: Promotional Campaign of the Year (2005, 2015, 2017); Utility of the Year—Provincial (2006, 2016, 2017); Participant of the Year (2010).

Noteworthy activities and accomplishments in 2016:

  • Achieved sales of 3,411,185 coupon units, delivering savings of more than 53.41 GW, exceeding 2016 targets for coupon savings by 147%.
  • Total 2016 residential (including HVAC and low-income programs that featured ENERGY STAR) and small business savings (including coupons above) of 72.83 GWh, exceeding 2016 targets by 47%.
  • Promoted ENERGY STAR certified products in robust Ontario-wide marketing campaigns, including print, digital, social media, radio, and 66 in-store events.
  • Distributed 735,000 booklets including coupons in 90 community newspapers.
  • Launched a new program for small businesses promoting ENERGY STAR lighting.

This is Hydro One’s first ENERGY STAR award.

Noteworthy activities and accomplishments in 2016:

  • In 2016, Philips had more than 200 ENERGY STAR approved products available through distributors and major retailers across Canada
  • Participating in ENERGY STAR consumer outreach by sharing information on ENERGY STAR lighting through community events, social media, point of purchase materials, print advertising, and the company web site.
  • In 2016, Philips launched an ENERGY STAR certified lightbulb in Canada which can transform a space with three different lighting options: functional, daylight and warm glow. Philips also launched its personal wireless LED lighting for the home which controls lights from a device and can create the right ambiance for every moment.

This is Philips Lighting Canada’s first ENERGY STAR award.

Retailer of the year—national—2017

Home Depot of Canada Inc.

Home Depot of Canada, one of the country’s biggest home improvement retailers has 182 stores across the country. Through its commitment to sustainability, the company recognizes ENERGY STAR as a trusted brand whose familiar symbol lends credibility to the store’s energy-efficient products.

Noteworthy activities and accomplishments in 2016:

  • Partnered with utilities across Canada to issue millions in instant rebates to customers, primarily on ENERGY STAR LED bulbs, to make energy-efficient products even more affordable.
  • Hosted 1,234 events (812 with Philips and 422 with utilities) to educate customers on ENERGY STAR certified products.
  • Increased its LED bulb selection significantly in 2016, including products from Philips, Cree, Feit and THD’s private brand Ecosmart.
  • Ran various campaigns throughout 2016 to promote ENERGY STAR certified products, including "more selection, more value on LED" marketing campaign and a unique pilot program with the IESO to promote and increase sales of ENERGY STAR certified appliances.
  • Involved in the production of video in support of ENERGY STAR Day (October 25) that was posted on ENERGY STAR Facebook account.

Home Depot of Canada has won nine ENERGY STAR awards: Retailer of the Year—National (2004, 2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017; Sustained Excellence (2012); Advocate of the Year (2005).

Samsung Electronics Canada

Samsung views the ENERGY STAR program as a key partner in advancing energy efficiency. The company is focused on ensuring that its product line meets or exceeds ENERGY STAR technical specifications for all new models.

Noteworthy activities and accomplishments in 2016:

  • In 2016, 99% of all televisions sold by Samsung were ENERGY STAR certified.
  • Increased market penetration of ENERGY STAR certified appliances by over 30% from 2015 to 2016.
  • Partnered with BC Hydro to promote and increase awareness of ENERGY STAR certified clothes washers, clothes dryers, refrigerators and televisions. Market coverage included displays, print, radio, on-line and mobile displays, paid search and sponsored social to generate over 80 million impressions.

Samsung Electronics Canada has won six ENERGY STAR awards: Manufacturer of the Year–Appliances (2017); Manufacturer of the Year–Electronics (2015, 2016, 2017); Promoter of the Year–ENERGY STAR Most Efficient 2015 (2016); Collaborative Initiative of the Year (2012).

Manufacturer of the year—windows and doors (fenestration)—2017

JELD-WEN of Canada

The Canadian operation of this international window and door manufacturer has four manufacturing facilities, five distribution centres and three design centres across the country, with sales in every province. JELD-WEN of Canada has a strong commitment to ENERGY STAR as an integral part of its culture. The company continues to grow its product lines to offer a diverse array of ENERGY STAR certified products.

Noteworthy activities and accomplishments in 2016:

  • Increased the number of ENERGY STAR certified models by 33% from 534 591 to 711 527 over one year.
  • Increased the production of ENERGY STAR certified products by 7% over the previous year.
  • Provided builders with alternative solutions for the new ENERGY STAR for New Homes criteria in 2016.
  • Partnered with EnerQuality as an industry sponsor to fund builder training for the ENERGY STAR for New Homes program.

JELD-WEN of Canada has won six ENERGY STAR awards: Manufacturer of the Year—Windows and Doors (2012, 2016, 2017); Sustained Excellence (2010); Participant of the Year (2009); Promotional Campaign of the Year—Specific Product (2006).

Manufacturer of the year—heating and cooling equipment—2017

Rheem Canada Ltd./Ltee.

Rheem Canada is continually striving to offer the highest efficiency residential & commercial heating and cooling and water heating products to Canadian consumers.

Noteworthy activities and accomplishments in 2016:

  • Introduction of an ENERGY STAR certified modulating gas furnace, with 97% AFUE, recognized as the Most Efficient of ENERGY STAR 2016.
  • Introduction of ENERGY STAR certified variable-speed air conditioner and variable-speed heat pump models. 
  • Partnered with NRCan, NetZero Project, Province of BC, FortisBC and BC Hydro to test and validate the 3.50 EF efficiency of a hybrid electric heat pump water heater (HPWH) (duct-able) in the Canadian climate.
  • Introduction of hybrid electric heat pump water heater to the Canadian market. This new water heater offers homeowners the highest EF rating and is one of the smartest, quietest and efficient water heaters available in the market.
  • ENERGY STAR features prominently in product literature, product videos and retail displays. Rheem also has a separate ENERGY STAR Products webpage.

This is Rheem Canada’s first ENERGY STAR award.

Manufacturer of the year—lighting—2017

Conglom Inc.

Noteworthy activities and accomplishments in 2016:

  • Increased its offering of Luminus ENERGY STAR certified LED models by 52% in 2016.
  • Expanded its retail partner relationships resulting in a 57% increase in the number of retail clients carrying Luminus ENERGY STAR certified products in 2016.
  • Partnered with Dollarama, Rona and NS Power on promotion of ENERGY STAR certified Luminus LED products.

This is Conglom Inc.’s first ENERGY STAR award.

Manufacturer of the year—commercial products—2017

QBD Cooling Systems Inc.

Established in 1981, QBD is Canada’s leading manufacturer of commercial refrigeration products. The company is committed to creating energy efficient equipment that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and save money.

Noteworthy activities and accomplishments in 2016:

  • QBD has undertaken extensive research and has developed an entire new product line of coolers based on Hydrocarbon (HC) refrigerants which are much more energy efficient than traditional coolers.
  • 100% of QBD’s HC product line in 2016 is ENERGY STAR certified.
  • QBD has increased awareness of ENERGY STAR benefits among their large customer base through promotional materials and training.

This is QBD Cooling System Inc.’s first ENERGY STAR award.

Sustained excellence—2017

City Green Solutions

City Green Solutions is an enterprising non-profit with a mission to excite, inspire and lead British Columbians in finding innovative home and building energy efficiency solutions.

City Green Solutions has demonstrated sustained excellence as an active participant and champion of the ENERGY STAR for New Homes (ESNH) initiative. City Green Solutions has enthusiastically promoted energy-efficient homes and ESNH, and has contributed to the advancement of energy efficiency in codes and increased awareness of ENERGY STAR certified homes in the market.

Noteworthy activities and accomplishments since 2010:

  • Chaired the Technical Advisory Committee that resulted in the implementation of the ESNH Standard in the British Columbia housing market in 2014.
  • Championed the ESNH program by engaging industry professionals in building and promoting high energy efficiency homes.
  • Developed the ENERGY STAR Features Campaign, designed as both a consumer marketing campaign and an industry training initiative to foster greater understanding, and ultimately increased consumer valuation, of ENERGY STAR products and homes.
  • Provided training and building capacity for builders, energy advisors and other stakeholders through the design of free webinars.

This is City Green Solutions’ first ENERGY STAR award.

Union Gas Limited

Union Gas Limited is a major Canadian natural gas storage, transmission and distribution company based in Ontario.

Union Gas launched their “All Homes are Not Created Equal” campaign in 2016 to promote the economic and environmental benefits of higher performance ENERGY STAR certified homes. With the use of both traditional and new media, Union Gas set out to build demand for a higher standard of energy efficiency among prospective buyers while providing builders with information and resources needed to meet that demand.

Noteworthy activities and accomplishments in 2016:

  • Partnered with 22 top builders to transform the market by building and sustaining the production of high performance/ENERGY STAR certified homes in Union Gas territory.
  • Increased the number of new homes built with ENERGY STAR certification: out of more than 2,000 new homes constructed in 2016 by participating builders, 70% (approximately 1,400 homes) earned the ENERGY STAR.
  • Hosted a series of Builder Forums designed to leverage the ENERGY STAR certification as a way to build to a high standard while keeping costs down.
  • Increased consumer awareness and understanding of the value of investing in an ENERGY STAR certified home through clever illustrations of key features, an animated ‘behind the walls’ video tour, and visually inspiring graphics to depict the difference between new homes built to the current Ontario code and energy efficient ENERGY STAR ones.

This is Union Gas’ first ENERGY STAR award.
