You might not be eligible, please read carefully before answering the next question:
Depending on when you had your evaluation done – you may have different next steps.
- If your evaluation was done before April 1, 2020, you will need a new evaluation. If you’re still interested in our grant, we’d recommend you start your application so you can have a new evaluation done for your home.
- If your evaluation was done between April 1, 2020 and November 30, 2020, you can use your evaluation for the initiative but you won’t receive a grant of up to $600 for the evaluation itself. Make sure that you upload your EnerGuide Label and Renovation Upgrade Report with your application once you’re ready to apply!
- If your evaluation was completed between December 1, 2020 and June 30, 2021, make sure to upload your EnerGuide Label and Renovation Upgrade Report with your application, once you’re ready to apply! You can receive the grant for both your evaluations and your retrofits if you complete at least one eligible retrofit on or after December 1, 2020. In this case, the retrofit does not need to be recommended by your energy advisor in their report.
- If your evaluation was completed on or after July 1, 2021, you can receive the grant for both your evaluations and your retrofits. But you will only receive the grant if you go all the way through the process - meaning you complete both your evaluations and at least one recommended retrofit. Make sure to upload your EnerGuide Label and Renovation Upgrade Report with your application, once you’re ready to apply!

You may need the approval from your condo board
Ensure to contact your condo or strata board if you are hoping to do any retrofits on the outside of your building.

If you represent an Indigenous government or organization
Indigenous Peoples face unique challenges that influence participation in a housing retrofit initiative. If you’re applying as an Indigenous government or organization (e.g., band councils, land claim organizations), a housing management body, or other representative or Indigenous service delivery organization with formal partnerships with Indigenous governments or organizations:
- you’re eligible to register multiple homes
- you must own the home(s) or have a formal partnership to represent the owners, but the homes do not need to be the owner’s primary residence
- the homes must be occupied by an Indigenous household
Is your community off-grid?
Indigenous groups can find out if their community is considered “off-grid” by consulting the Remote Energy Communities Database.
To apply
Indigenous groups can call 1-833-674-8282 Monday to Friday: 8:00 am to 8:00 pm (Eastern time) and indicate that they want to register. Their name and contact information will be taken down and they will receive a call back within a few days.
You must have one of the eligible property types to access this grant.
If you are applying as an Indigenous homeowner who lives off-reserve and/or you own your home you can apply online through the homeowner portal directly. If you do not pay property taxes or have an alternative proof of ownership such as a Certificate of Possession or a Certificate of Occupation, please enter the number from your document in the “assessment roll #” field. You will be able to submit your application as long as a number from an ownership document has been entered in that field. It does not have to be a property tax bill number.

Based on what you told us, it sounds like you’re a good fit!
To receive a grant, you’ll need to pay up-front for two EnerGuide evaluations. You’ll receive up to $600 through the initiative for these.
These evaluations will recommend which of our eligible retrofits are the best options to improve the energy efficiency of your home. The grant provides up to $5000 but you are not guaranteed to receive the full amount if you apply.
You will only receive a grant if you go all the way through the process - meaning you complete both your evaluations and at least one recommended retrofit.
Before you apply
- Make sure you understand how the grant process works
- Get a valid piece of government-issued ID with your primary address on it (like a driver’s license).
- Have your tax roll number handy (you can find it on a property tax bill).
- Look into available service organizations in your area to undertake your pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation.
Conditions for residents of these provinces
-
Quebec and Nova Scotia Residents
Residents of Quebec and Nova Scotia need to apply directly through their provincial programs to book their EnerGuide evaluation and register: -
New Brunswick and British Columbia (West Kootenay) Residents
New Brunswick and British Columbia (West Kootenay) have requested that we direct residents in those provinces to go through the provincial program first to ensure homeowners can take advantage of the network of energy advisors already established in those provinces.
