How products are listed with the Canada Greener Homes Initiative

The Canada Greener Homes Grant is no longer accepting new applicants. Homeowners who are already participating are encouraged to proceed in a timely manner with their retrofits and will continue to be eligible for funding and support through the Canada Greener Homes portal.

If you are an Ontario, Quebec or Nova Scotia homeowner participating in the Home Efficiency Rebate Plus, the Rénoclimat or the Home Energy Assessment program, please contact your provincial program for more information.

The Canada Greener Homes Loan and the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program remain open. Thank you for your interest.

The searchable product list for the Canada Greener Homes Initiative includes best in class products from energy efficiency source lists such as ENERGY STAR® or Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships (NEEP) certified products. Additional criteria is then applied to certain product categories, as listed in the following sections.

Contact information

For more information on ENERGY STAR certified fenestration products, visit the Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) website.

To list a product as ENERGY STAR certified, manufacturers and brand owners must email NRCan at fenestration@nrcan-rncan.gc.ca.

B. Air Source Heat Pumps and Cold Climate Air Source Heat Pumps

Product lists

There are three searchable product lists for air source heat pumps and cold climate air source heat pumps:

Data sources

The searchable product lists for heat pumps are derived from three source lists:

Additional requirements

The two source lists are then filtered based on the following criteria set by the Canada Greener Homes Initiative:

  • For ENERGY STAR certified air source heat pumps
    • have a heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF2) AHRI Climate Region V ≥ 6.6 and SEER2 ≥ 15.2 (Systems with HSPF Region IV ≥ 10 are no longer being added to the eligible product lists. Systems already listed with HSPF Region IV ≥ 10 will continue to be eligible until June 1, 2025.)
    • the product status must be either Active or Production Stopped
  • For cold climate air source heat pumps
    • have an HSPF2 AHRI Climate Region V ≥6.6 AND SEER2 ≥ 15.2 (Systems with HSPF Region IV ≥ 10 are no longer being added to the eligible product lists. Systems already listed with HSPF Region IV ≥ 10 will continue to be eligible until June 1, 2025.)
    • have a capacity maintenance (Max -15°C [5°F]/Rated 8.3°C [47°F]) ≥70%
    • have a coefficient of performance ≥1.8 at -15°C (5°F) at maximum capacity operation
    • the product status must be Live
    • have a compressor of variable capacity with 3 or more distinct operating speeds, or continuously variable speed

Notes:

  1. If a heat pump is ENERGY STAR certified and meets the Canada Greener Homes Initiative criteria for cold climate air source heat pumps, it will be listed only once on the eligible products list. It will be listed only as a cold climate air source heat pump to maximize the grant amount.
  2. For the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program - “Coils Only” Systems (i.e., systems listed under the AHRI classification HRCU-A-C) are eligible only when paired with an electric furnace.

C. Ground Source Heat Pumps

Product list

There is one searchable product list for ground source heat pumps:

Data sources

The searchable ground source heat pump product list is derived from the federal regulatory list of all compliant ground source heat pumps in Canada. A ground source heat pump is compliant in Canada when it meets the requirements set in the Energy Efficiency Regulations, 2016 (SOR/2016-311), which are part of the Energy Efficiency Act.

IMPORTANT: Only water-to-air and brine-to-air ground source heat pumps are regulated in Canada and are eligible for the Canada Greener Homes Initiative. Direct Exchange (DX), water-to-water, and brine-to-water systems are not currently regulated in Canada and are not eligible for the Canada Greener Homes Initiative.

Why you might not see a product listed in the searchable product lists

There can be several reasons why a specific product is not listed in the searchable product lists for the Canada Greener Homes Initiative:

    • The product was not reported by the manufacturer or brand owner to the data sources used by the Canada Greener Homes Initiative.
    • The product was listed after the May 1 or November 1 deadline. In this case, the product will appear in the next quarterly update.
    • One or more performance standards does not meet the additional performance requirements for the Canada Greener Homes Initiative. For example, for a cold climate heat pump, the capacity maintenance must be (Max -15°C [5°F])/Rated 8.3°C [47°F]) ≥70%.
    • The product is not identified in the data source as being available or sold in Canada.
    • Some types of heat pumps, such as the DX water-to-water or brine-to-water ground source heat pump systems, are not currently eligible under the Canada Greener Homes Initiative.
