All about the Canada Greener Homes Initiative

The Canada Greener Homes Initiative provides grants and a loan for home evaluations and for retrofits. The eligible retrofits include home insulation, windows and doors, air sealing, and mechanical and renewable energy systems.

It is important that you read all the eligibility criteria and initiative requirements to be sure that you will qualify for the grants and/or the loan at the end of the process. You must undertake both a pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation to be eligible.

As part of the initiative, you have access to:

  • Grants from $125 to $5,000
To get a part of your costs back for eligible home retrofits
  • Up to $600
As a maximum contribution toward the total costs of your pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluations
  • Interest-free loans of up to $40,000, with a repayment term of 10 years to help you undertake major home retrofits

Requirements for the initiative

Conditions for residents of these provinces

Quebec and Nova Scotia

Residents of Quebec and Nova Scotia need to apply directly through their provincial programs to book their EnerGuide evaluations and to register:

New Brunswick and West Kootenay, British Columbia

New Brunswick and West Kootenay, British Columbia, have requested that we direct residents in those provinces to go through the provincial program first to ensure homeowners can take advantage of the network of energy advisors already established in those provinces.

If you are eligible for the Canada Greener Homes Initiative, you must:

  • apply and wait for your application to be approved by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan)
  • complete a pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation
  • complete at least one retrofit that is both eligible and recommended by your energy advisor in their Renovation Upgrade Report. Retrofits completed without having a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation completed first are not eligible for the grant.
  • purchase equipment and products from NRCan’s approved products list if you are replacing windows and heating equipment
  • ensure installations are done by a licensed professional, if applicable*
  • purchase all products in Canada. Online purchases are eligible only if they are ordered from an online distributor located in Canada.
  • keep copies of all your documents until March 31, 2028

* All mechanical systems, except thermostats, must be installed by a licensed professional. Mechanical systems include ground source heat pumps, air source heat pumps, cold climate air source heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, furnaces (eligible for northern and off-grid community residents only), and boilers (eligible for northern and off-grid community residents only).

Benefits of an energy-efficient home

By making home retrofits, you will help Canada meet its 2030 climate change commitments and significantly contribute to Canada’s goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

For homeowners, it means a more comfortable home, a more affordable home, and a healthier planet.
