Green Freight Assessment Program

Status: Closed

The Green Freight Assessment Program is officially closed.

Canada’s commitment to decarbonize medium and heavy duty fleets continues. As outlined in Budget 2022, NRCan will launch the recapitalized and expanded Green Freight Program in Fall 2022, designed to help decarbonize vehicles already on the road through investments in assessments, fleet retrofits and alternative fuel vehicles.

Natural Resources Canada will be hosting a series of engagement and consultation sessions. We encourage you to contact us if you would like to participate in these sessions, or if you have any feedback to share with the NRCan.

Background

In 2018, the Government of Canada launched the Green Freight Assessment Program (GFAP), investing $3.4M over four years to help trucking companies make data-driven investment decisions to reduce their emissions and fuel costs.

GFAP offered 50% cost-shared contributions to medium and heavy-duty vehicle fleets through two streams of funding:

  • Assessment Projects, which provided 50% cost-shared contributions up to $10,000 to companies to review their fleet’s performance through a third party fleet energy assessment
  • Implementation Projects, which provided 50% cost-shared contributions up to $100,000 towards the investment in fuel-reducing technologies that were recommended in each assessment. This included the implementation of fuel efficiency retrofits, operational best practices and the purchase of alternative fuel vehicles.

Final results

Assessment Projects have contributed to the review and analysis of over 6000 medium and heavy-duty vehicles, with Implementation Projects funding over 2700 individual retrofits, including the installation of:

  • Auxiliary Power Units
  • Auxiliary Bunk Heaters
  • Side Skirts
  • Boat Tails
  • Aerodynamic Mud Flaps
  • Gap Reducers
  • Battery HVAC
  • Predictive Cruise
  • Low Rolling Resistant Tires
  • Fuel-efficient driver training for over 600 drivers

In addition to truck retrofits, GFAP supported the purchase of 20 natural gas heavy-duty vehicles, helping to reduce the investment risk for companies interested in lower-carbon options.
