SmartWay tool updates

  • Freight Shippers

Version 2.0.17 of the Shipper Tool contains a number of updates and revisions to the prior version, 2.0.16. These updates have been implemented to enhance the usefulness and clarity of the Tool, and are summarized below:

    • The screen order has been revised in order to clarify data input options and simplify navigation through the Tool.
    • A new step has been added to the HOME screen for the user to select the level at which they would like to participate in SmartWay and to select the method they would like to input data into the tool.
    • The World Resources Institute (WRI) conducted a review of the underlying methodology, calculation process and supporting technical documentation of the SmartWay Shipper Tool, and it was found to be in conformance with the requirements set forth in the GHG Protocol Corporate Accounting Standard. New outputs are now available in the optional report section of the Tool providing Scope 3 emissions for public disclosure, consistent with WRI and Carbon Disclosure Project requirements.
    • An optional entry for Sustainability Officers has been added to the Contact Information section.
    • The Activity data screen was modified, adding a column allowing partners to identify “Shipper Carriers”, i.e. those carrier fleets that are operated by the shipper themselves. This information is used to exclude these fleets from the Scope 3 emissions estimates in the public disclosure report.
    • The following SmartWay Truck Carrier Categories can now select “Data Availability Option d” on the Activity screen, allowing partners to just report kilometres travelled for these fleets:
      • Expedited
      • Heavy/Bulk
      • Mixed
      • Specialized
    • The average payload values included in the carrier data file have been updated to reflect Shipper payload distributions (formerly based on carrier distributions).
    • The validation ranges that determine if a payload entered by the user is out of range of typical industry values have been updated as well.
    • The bases for calculating emissions (kilometres or tonne-kilometres) have been updated, depending upon the carrier’s SmartWay Category:
      • Auto carriers – kilometres
      • Drayage – kilometres
      • Expedited – kilometres
      • Flatbed – kilometres
      • General (non-SmartWay only) – tonne-kilometres
      • Heavy/bulk – kilometres
      • LTL – tonne-kilometres
      • Mixed – tonne-kilometres
      • Moving – kilometres
      • Multimodal – tonne-kilometres
      • Package – tonne-kilometres
      • Refrigerated – tonne-kilometres
      • Specialized – kilometres
      • Tanker - kilometres
      • TL/Dry Van – tonne-kilometres
    • The composite-level emissions factor calculations have been updated to mass emissions divided by distance and are no longer weighted by carrier.
    • The composite-level average payload calculation has been updated to total tonne-kilometres divided by total kilometres and is no longer weighted by carrier tonne-kilometres.
    • Partners are now required to review three summary data screens under Step 6 on the Home screen before finalizing their submission.
    • Miscellaneous text and format updates have been made for clarification.
  • Logistics companies

Version 2.0.17 of the Logistics Tool contains a number of updates and revisions to the prior version, 2.0.16. These updates have been implemented to enhance the usefulness and clarity of the Tool, and are summarized below:

    • An optional entry for Sustainability Officers has been added to the Contact Information section.
    • The following SmartWay Truck Carrier Categories can now select Data Availability Option on the Activity screen, allowing partners to just report kilometres travelled for these fleets:
      • Expedited
      • Heavy/Bulk
      • Mixed
      • Specialized
    • Miscellaneous text and format updates for clarification.
    • A “save” option has been added to all reports to allow for exporting to Excel format.
    • Miscellaneous text and format updates have been added for clarification.
  • Truck Carriers

Version 2.0.18 of the Truck Tool contains a number of updates and revisions to the prior version 2.0.17. These updates have been implemented to enhance the usefulness, clarity and accuracy of the Tool, and are summarized below:

    • New NOx and PM emission factors have been updated for the 2019 calendar year from the US EPA MOVES model, version 2014b.
    • Updated TRU (Truck Refrigerator Unit or “reefer”) emissions factors from the new MOVES model, version 2014b.
    • Updated fuel economy validation ranges for internal combustion vehicles.
    • Added direction to reefer fuel data entry screen to ensure users do not enter rail reefer fuel in the truck tool.
    • Miscellaneous text and format updates for clarification.
  • Multimodal carriers

Version 2.0.17 of the Multimodal Tool contains a number of updates and revisions to the prior version, 2.0.16. These updates have been implemented to enhance the usefulness and clarity of the Tool, and are summarized below:

    • The Contacts Section has been updated to clarify the relationship between Sustainability Contacts and other contacts.
    • Miscellaneous text and format updates for clarification.
    • For Truck component fleets –
      • New NOx and PM emission factors have been updated for 2018 from the EPA MOVES model.
      • Black Carbon (BC) emission factors have been added to the Truck reports, based on elemental carbon (EC) factors obtained from the EPA MOVES model. Truck Partner performance metrics are now available for BC as well as CO2, NOx, and PM.
      • NOx and PM emission factors for transportation refrigeration (reefer) units were updated to reflect 2018 calendar year emissions using the NONROAD component of the EPA MOVES model.
    • For Logistics component fleets –
      • New SmartWay Categories have been added for Multimodal carriers: Surface, Surface-Air, Surface-Marine, and Surface-Air-Marine.
      • Additional validation checks have been added for barge carrier product density and Surface-Air Multimodal carrier payloads.
      • Average carrier volumes have been added to the Logistics Input Summary reports.
    • For Barge component fleets –
      • An inconsistency was identified in the emission factors in the 2008 locomotive and marine U.S. Federal Rulemaking where PM emissions for pre-2000 engines where lower than for newer engines. These values have been set equal to model year 2000 engine emissions for consistency.
    • For Rail component fleets –
      • Class 2 and 3 Rail operators must now provide an estimate for total railcar kilometres traveled for the reporting year.
