In support of gasification research at CanmetENERGY, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) gasification modelling capability is being developed. This modelling capability will complement the pilot-scale experimental program in the design, testing, and operation of current and next generation coal gasifiers. CFD models can provide insight into the inner-workings of a gasifier by giving a detailed representation of the fluid flow, heat transfer and chemical reaction characteristics. Since modern gasifier designs typically involve using pure oxygen and have high operating pressures and temperatures, it can be difficult to obtain experimental data in the reaction zones of the unit. The CFD data, generated by computer calculations, can be helpful in explaining the performance of a gasifier design and provide guidance in operation optimization.

Developing a Gasification Modelling Capability

CanmetENERGY’s researchers are currently examining and evaluating different CFD modelling approaches to simulate the gasification process. Model results of the pilot-scale gasifier at our facilities compare qualitatively well with experimental observation and provide information to support the design of the injection system. As more quantitative measurements become available, more validation studies will be conducted. The goal is to develop a well-validated gasification modelling capability that can be utilized to support pilot-scale research activities and provide scale-up of gasifier design to industrial-scale.

International Partnership

CanmetENERGY’s researchers have also established collaboration with the Thermal Power Research Institute (TPRI) External Hyperlink  in China. TPRI is the technical centre supporting the China GreenGen Program  External Hyperlinkfor demonstrating Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) with CO2 capture and sequestration. They are in the process of designing an industrial-scale 250MW gasifier to be commissioned by 2009. We will be using data generated by TPRI from their 10MW pilot-scale gasifier to further develop and validate the CFD gasification models.
