Doug McClenahan has a Bachelor of Applied Science (BASc) in Systems Design Engineering from the University of Waterloo. He is also a member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO).
In 2014, he was appointed Manager of the Renewable Heat and Power R&D Group, which includes solar thermal, district energy, hybrid energy systems, smart communities, marine renewable and wind energy research. Prior to this, his research focused on solar heating and cooling systems development for residential, commercial and industrial application, including solar seasonal storage for space heating and solar domestic hot water systems.
Doug led the Drake Landing Solar Community project located in Okotoks, Alberta. This community is a 52-house subdivision which uses solar thermal energy and seasonal heat storage to provide close to 100% of the space heating needs of the community, a first in the world. The Drake Landing Solar Community has garnered international recognition and has won multiple awards, most recently the IEA Solar Heating & Cooling Award in 2013 and the Energy Globe World Award in 2011.
