Dr. Dean Haslip has been the Director General of CanmetENERGY – Ottawa since August 2013. He is responsible for a research centre comprising two hundred people conducting research in energy efficiency, clean fossil fuels, and renewable and alternative energy.
Dr. Haslip earned a Bachelor’s degree in Physics at McMaster University, a Master’s degree in Neutrino Astrophysics at Queen’s University, and a Doctorate degree in Nuclear Structure Physics at McMaster University.
Upon graduation in 1998, Dr. Haslip joined Defence R&D Canada (DRDC), the Science and Technology arm of Canada’s Department of National Defence. He began his career as a Defence Scientist in the Radiological Analysis & Defence group, specializing in radiation protection for Canadian Forces personnel and radiological counter-terrorism. In 2006, he moved to the DRDC Centre for Operational Research and Analysis, taking responsibility for the Operational Research program supporting Canada’s Army and Operational Commands. In 2010, he accepted a position with DRDC’s Corporate Office as a Program Director, responsible for DRDC’s Joint Operational Research and Strategic Analysis programs, its Chemical Biological and Radiological Defence program, and its program in support of Special Operations Forces. In 2012, he accepted a position as Acting Director General for S&T Operations, where his responsibilities included the financial management of the Defence S&T program, and Leadership of DRDC’s Technology Demonstration Program.
