Advancement and scaling up of Canada’s bioeconomy requires reliable and accurate information on the attributes, volumes and costs of Canadian biomass residues. To reach its full potential, the bioeconomy needs consistent regulatory frameworks and approaches, as well as accepted standards and certification processes for the wide variety of feedstocks and bioproducts that exist.
This project aims to enhance market and regulatory confidence in biomass feedstocks by enabling greater utilization of residual biomass and by reducing feedstock and supply chain risks. In support of the bioeconomy, our team is engaging with the stakeholders along the value chain, including suppliers, end-users and regulatory agencies. Our primary focus areas include:
- quantifying the physicochemical properties of available biomass residues
- developing densification and other pre-treatment protocols to improve biomass properties
- developing standardized protocols and reference data to bridge biomass-derived feedstocks with the needs of heavy greenhouse gas-emitting industries like steel, cement, and electricity production
- engaging with national and international standards organizations to define the methods for analysis, quantification and classification
- dispelling uncertainties around quality, performance, environmental, and health and safety issues related to biomass utilization in Canadian commercial, industrial, and institutional sectors
