Novel CO2 cycles for industrial waste heat recovery

Project location: CanmetENERGY Ottawa, Ottawa, ON

Timeline: 2 years (2020 to 2022)

Program: Industry

Project description

Our team is investigating the use of supercritical and transcritical CO2 power cycles to recover waste heat from industrial sources for producing electricity. We are also investigating their ability to integrate with renewable energy sources (e.g. wind, solar, geothermal), for storing and re-using excess waste heat or renewable energy for load balancing, to achieve higher overall energy efficiency.

Some of the actions we are taking include process simulation and model development, system scale integration with various low- and high-grade heat sources, and techno-economic assessments.
