Sources – Mapping Tool
Toporama - Mapping Tool - uses data from many sources for the topographic maps in the Atlas of Canada.
Data Source | Data Scale | Minimum Scale | Maximum Scale |
---|---|---|---|
Topographic data of Canada - CanVec Series | 1:50 000 | 1:1 000 | 1:115 000 |
National Topographic Data Base (NTDB) - ARCHIVED | 1:250 000 | 1:115 001 | 1:550 000 |
Atlas of Canada National Scale Data | 1:1 000 000 | 1:550 001 | 1:2 750 000 |

Map Sources:
Canadian Digital Elevation Data (CDED)
A Canadian Digital Elevation Data (CDED) consists of an ordered array of ground or reflective surface elevations, recorded in metres, at regularly spaced intervals. Note: This collection is a legacy product that is no longer supported. Current users of Canadian Digital Elevation Data (CDED) should plan to make the transition towards the up-to-date Canadian Digital Elevation Model (CDEM) product.
Orthoimages of Canada 1999-2003 – CanImage
CanImage is an image composed of 3 spectral bands originating from resampled Landsat 7 orthoimages. Data acquisition dates can vary between scenes (between 1999 and 2003), so the images may not contain current features such as new roads and urban development. Spectral bands have a pixel size of 15 metres.
Topographic data of Canada - CanVec Series
CanVec is a multi-source product coming mainly from the National Topographic Data Base (NTDB), the Mapping the North process conducted by the Canada Center for Mapping and Earth Observation (CCMEO), the Atlas of Canada data, the GeoBase initiative, and the data update using satellite imagery coverage (e.g. Landsat 7, Spot, Radarsat, etc.).
GeoBase initiative sources:
National Hydro Network - NHN - GeoBase Series
The National Hydro Network (NHN) focuses on providing a quality geometric description and a set of basic attributes describing Canada's inland surface waters. It provides geospatial vector data describing hydrographic features such as lakes, reservoirs, rivers, streams, canals, islands, obstacles (e.g. waterfalls, rapids, rocks in water) and constructions (e.g. dams, wharves, dikes), as well as a linear drainage network and the toponymic information (geographical names) associated to hydrography.
National Road Network - NRN - GeoBase Series
The National Road Network (NRN) product contains quality geospatial data of the following phenomena: road segment, ferry connection segment, junction, blocked passage and toll point. The maintenance is done through the closest to the source organizations.
National Railway Network - NRWN - GeoBase Series
The National Road Network (NRWN) product contains quality geospatial data of the following phenomena: track, junction, crossing, marker post, station and structure. The maintenance is done through the closest to the source organizations.
