Abstract
Overall, there were 289 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity installed in Canada in 2011, representing over 335 gigawatt-hours of power generation on an annual basis. This level of activity created $594 million of direct economic output and employed approximately 5,100 direct full time equivalents on an annual basis.
Canada's PV sector has been undergoing significant change over the last 5 years, during which time the focus of the Canadian PV sector shifted from primarily residential off-grid and niche applications to grid-connected systems. Due primarily to Ontario's Renewable Energy Standard Offer Program and subsequent Feed-in Tariff program for grid-connected PV, Canada's solar sector has been an area of significant investment in 2011.
This sector profile looks at the state of the market throughout Canada, including various incentives in place, provides an update on installations in 2011, describes the PV supply chain, key manufacturers, economic impacts, workforce capability and the state of R&D initiatives in Canada.
