Government of Canada Announces Funding to First EQuilibrium™ Communities Project
OTTAWA — Today, the Government of Canada named the first project under its EQuilibrium™ Communities Initiative. The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Natural Resources, and the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, announced $481,000 in funding for the Station Pointe neighbourhood development in Edmonton, Alberta.
Station Pointe is one of six winning projects under the EQuilibrium™ Communities Initiative. The EQuilibrium™ Communities Initiative provides financial assistance for technical and promotional activities of selected neighbourhood development projects, which through their planning, design, implementation and operation, will improve current approaches in the areas of energy and water consumption, protection of the natural environment, land-use planning and sustainable transportation. Capital construction costs are not provided through the initiative.
“Building sustainable communities that use clean energy technologies and energy-efficient designs will help create high-quality jobs for Canadians while protecting and preserving our environment,” said Minister Paradis. “This initiative will improve the Station Pointe team’s capacity to bring to market an affordable, energy-efficient, mixed-use neighbourhood benefiting consumers, the environment and the economy. We are proud to be able to provide both financial and technical support.”
“The Government of Canada is committed to working with developers who design and build vibrant and sustainable communities across Canada,” said Minister Finley. “We congratulate The Communitas Group Ltd. and look forward to collaborating with them to improve the project’s environmental performance and affordability so that Canadians will benefit from the lessons learned.”
The Station Pointe project is being planned as a transit-oriented development within the Fort Road community in the City of Edmonton, part of a larger renewal project for former industrial lands northeast of the city’s downtown. The EQuilibrium™ Communities funding will support environmental performance as well as options to improve the affordability of the project’s green upgrades.
“The EQuilibrium™ Communities Initiative support gives us an invaluable opportunity to extensively explore design and financing options to create a landmark energy-efficient community development,” said Brian Scott, Vice-President of The Communitas Group Ltd. “Research into 'passivehouse' designs and 'district energy systems' as well as on-site waste water treatment will help us reach our target of a 75 percent reduction in energy use while maintaining affordable home prices.”
The EQuilibrium™ Communities Initiative is led jointly and equally funded by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and Natural Resources Canada’s ecoENERGY Technology Initiative, a component of the Government of Canada’s ecoACTION initiative.
