TORONTO — The Honourable Joe Oliver, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, today announced his latest official visit to Europe to highlight Canada as a secure and responsible energy partner. Minister Oliver will highlight the benefits of enhanced energy cooperation through effective, meaningful, science-based environmental measures. He will travel to Rome from November 17 to 18, to London on November 19, and to Paris from November 19 to 20.

“Canada is a safe, secure and environmentally responsible energy producer that will make an important contribution to energy security in Europe and globally,” said Minister Oliver.

While in Europe, Minister Oliver will meet with senior government officials and energy industry executives. He will also discuss the importance of fair and transparent rules and regulations with regard to the proposed Fuel Quality Directive by the European Union. Canada's position is that the Fuel Quality Directive should align with the three principles of transparency, non-discrimination and sound science. Scheduled events during the Minister’s visit include:

  • Roundtable luncheon with the Italian business community in Rome, Italy;
  • Keynote remarks to the Canada–Europe Energy Summit in London, England; and
  • Participation in the International Energy Agency’s Ministerial Meeting in Paris, France.

“Canada supports the EU Commission’s objective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions for transportation fuels but believes it must be based on science and facts,” added Minister Oliver.
