Launch of CanmetENERGY CO2 Research Facility

Our Conservative government recognizes the importance of science and technology as a driver of our long-term economic growth. And we certainly recognize the outstanding work of our world-class research and researchers.
Our government believes that responsible development of our natural resources is key to our economic growth. This responsible development is realized through scientific and technological research.
That’s why it’s a pleasure for me to be here today to help launch the new CanmetENERGY Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Research Facility.
Today, the largest barrier to carbon capture and storage isn’t the storage. It’s the cost of capturing the CO2.
The International Energy Agency has identified cost reduction as a priority in advancing carbon capture and storage.
Building the capacity to address this priority isn’t done overnight.
In fact, last week I was in Washington to sign a Declaration of Intent (DOI) for Cooperation in Energy Science and Technology with my counterpart Steven Chu, U.S. Secretary of Energy.
The DOI provides a formal structure for collaborative activities between the two countries focused initially on expanded research and development in bioenergy and carbon capture and storage.
So as you can see, we are moving on many fronts.
In the early 1990s, CanmetENERGY built the world’s first research unit for advanced oxy-fuel combustion — burning fuel and pure oxygen. From the start, this unit conducted groundbreaking innovation in the capture of CO2.
The success of this effort was due in large part to the development of an international network. It is called the CanmetENERGY CO2 Research and Development Consortium.
The facility we launch today builds on this earlier work. It also advances the collaboration and work of the R&D Consortium.
We anticipate the research conducted at this facility will offer major advances in carbon capture and storage — such as reducing its cost and understanding its link to clean coal systems.
I’m pleased today to see the results of many years of effort by CanmetENERGY — effort made in partnership with industries that have helped develop this new technology.
And again, I’m honoured to participate in this celebration — to join you today in launching the new CanmetENERGY CO2 Research Facility.
