Objective 4.1 Canadians safeguarded from natural hazards

4.1.1 Monitor and address natural hazards and disasters

Objective 4.2 A national framework for spatial positioning, mapping and boundary maintenance
4.2.1 Improve Canada’s spatial reference infrastructure and the topographic information base

4.2.1.4 By 2003, establish an improved model of mean sea level (geoid) surface. Completed.
4.2.1.5 By 2003, produce an up-to-date, accurate and homogenous orthorectified satellite image of the entire country. In progress. A total of 717 images have been completed, representing near of 94 per cent of the territory. A new target date for completion has been set for March 31, 2006.
Objective 4.3 Safe use of explosives and pyrotechnics
4.3.1 Promote safe communities by increasing public security related to explosives

4.3.1.1 By 2002, amend the Explosives Actto accommodate counter-terrorism initiatives. Completed.
4.3.1.3 By 2003, perform research under the Canada/US Counter-terrorism R&D Program, on technologies to enhance detection of explosives. Completed.
4.3.1.4 By 2003, perform studies on the effectiveness of advanced materials in increasing the blast resistance of windows and concrete building elements. Completed.
Objective 4.4 Enhanced safety and security in Canada’s natural resource sector
4.4.1 Enhance health and safety for mine workers

4.4.1.2 By 2003, contribute to improved diesel particulate sampling by developing a sampling system as well as a sampling and analysis protocol to meet new exposure guidelines. Completed.
4.4.1.3 By 2003, provide improved underground air quality by optimizing ventilation air systems. Completed.
