Did you know that buildings, including our homes, account for 18% of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions? That’s one of the reasons why we're introducing the Canada Greener Homes Grant.
It will give homeowners up to $5,000 to help them make energy efficiency upgrades to their homes.
These upgrades will make their homes more comfortable to live in, reduce costs and lower greenhouse gas emissions.
But where do you start?
The first step is to have a EnerGuide home evaluation done before the retrofit. Then come the renovations themselves, and finally you'll need a follow up evaluation.
You can register for the program online.
Evaluations are done by independent energy advisors who are registered with Natural Resources Canada through our EnerGuide program.
They generate a report that will help you decide what renovations need to be done and which are eligible for the program or to other provincial programs.
We'll provide up to $600 for the evaluations.
So, what does an energy evaluation look like?
Usually, the energy advisor will start with the exterior of your home, and then evaluate the interior.
They'll note the number, type, and location of all windows and exterior doors.
They'll examine the insulation levels of your walls, ceilings and basement.
They'll record the size and efficiency ratings of your space heating, space cooling and water heating equipment.
They'll look at your home's ventilation equipment.
And finally, they'll measure the level of your home’s airtightness, using a blower door test.
All this data will be compiled using an energy simulation software program that calculates your home’s EnerGuide rating.
You'll get an EnerGuide label, a homeowner information sheet, and a renovation upgrade report to help you make decisions on which upgrades will have the most benefits for your home.
Once your renovations are completed, a post-evaluation will be done to confirm your reimbursement.
That's it! Pretty straightforward, right?
