Project Objectives

The Nihtat Energy Ltd (NEL) is an Indigenous owned and operated business that is pursuing a series of staged projects in the Beaufort Delta region over 2021 and 2022. This includes implementation and related training for a solar project at the Inuvik Satellite Station Facility (ISSF) site near Inuvik in 2021, and planning for a 1 MW grid-connected solar farm in Inuvik to commence in 2021 and be completed in 2022.

Expected Results

NEL’s implementation approach includes supporting Indigenous participation and is expected to realize many positive benefits including:  local training and employment, mitigating climate change impacts, local economic development and supporting energy security. With support from the Northwest Territories Power Corporation, this project is an example of collaboration between Indigenous communities, utilities, and governments.
