Project Objectives

The objective of this project is the development and comparative evaluation of a 6-storey Multi Unit Residential Building (MURB) of approximately 103,000 sq. ft. and approximately 111 units to accelerate market adoption of high performance MURBs in Canada and reduce the long-term cost of mitigating the carbon emissions of the country's building stock.

The project aims to achieve or surpass Passive House Classic certification and BC Energy Step Code Tier 4 within an 11% incremental cost compared to code-compliant MURBs, and consume at least 65% less energy than current MURBs today.

The project will include a comparative analysis with a nearby, similar-sized, code-compliant MURB utilizing collected building performance data including energy use, emissions, and indoor environmental quality.

Expected Results

This project will provide solutions to existing technical, economic, and regulatory barriers facing the development of very high performance MURBs in Canada. The comparative analysis to a code-built MURB will inform the business case around building a very high-performance MURB and the data collected will help the project’s academic partners develop more detailed building simulation models.
