Lead Proponent

St. Mary’s River Energy LP

Project Objectives

This project’s objectives include the refurbishment of a decommissioned run-of-river hydro plant with new solar photovoltaic and lithium-ion battery capacity and a control system integrated into the existing diesel grid at Mary’s Harbour, NL.

The project will refurbish the 240 kW hydro system with new generating components and a modern control system, and install a 250 kW solar photovoltaic plant and 500kW lithium-ion battery storage.

Expected Results

The project will demonstrate improved technical readiness of an integrated diesel microgrid including hydro, solar, and battery components. The knowledge gained will reduce the risk to similar projects. The project expects to reduce diesel fuel consumption with a corresponding reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Anticipated Environmental Benefits:

Reduced diesel fuel consumption, approximately 400,000 litres (30%) less annually.
