Energy Innovation Program - Carbon capture, utilization and storage stream

Status: Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) Studies Expression of Interest closed intake as of September 22, 2021 11:59 pm EDT. After review by an expert technical committee successful applicants will be invited to submit full project proposals in the Winter of 2021.

Background

Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) provides an important pathway to emissions reductions for energy and industrial activities under conditions where neither electrification nor low carbon fuels are able to provide technically or economically feasible low-carbon solutions.

As part of Budget 2021, the government is investing $319 million over seven years into research, development, and demonstrations to advance the commercial viability of CCUS technologies. These funds will support businesses, academia, non-profits, government, and federal laboratories on the path to net-zero emissions by 2050. This is the first call for CCUS project proposals by the Office of Energy Research and Development (OERD). Future calls will be announced on the OERD Energy Innovation Program web page.

Seeking FEED Studies for CCUS Facilities

This call supports Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) studies for CCUS projects that have the potential to significantly mitigate emissions. These projects will increase the knowledge base for applying CCUS technologies to different types of facilities in Canada. Completed FEED studies are expected to lead to the following broad outcomes:

  • Advancing engineering experience for large CCUS capital projects, producing references and analyses of performance and cost for new technologies and approaches to inform the development of next generation technology
  • Increasing the likelihood that CCUS will be constructed at scale in Canada across different industries, supporting different technologies and approaches to CO2 capture, transportation, usage and sequestration
  • Increasing the knowledge base of applying CCUS to different industrial facilities, supporting future replications across Canada and internationally
