Manage Your XRF Analyzer Operator Certification

As an x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer operator, it is your responsibility to keep an eye on the expiry date of your certification and to renew or recertify it on time.

Renewal versus recertification for XRF operators

  • When you are issued a new certification, it is valid for up to one year (if you applied for a one-year certification) or up to five years (if you applied for a 5-year certification). Shortly before your expiry date, you can renew your certification for an additional five-year period of validity.
  • Recertification is different and more involved. It requires passing one or more examinations. If you have reached the end of your second five-year period of validity (i.e., 10 years), or if more than 365 days have passed since your certification expired, you will need to recertify.

Whether you are renewing or recertifying, you are expected to be aware of the expiry date of your certification, and to apply to Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) for renewal or recertification as it approaches. NRCan does not notify operators when it is time for renewal or recertification of XRF certifications.

Recertification examination and re-examination

To recertify as an XRF analyzer operator, you need to write one or more XRF examinations, depending if you are applying for Level 1 or Level 2 recertification. You’re eligible to write an examination after you’ve submitted an XRF recertification application and have been issued an XRF examination admittance and registration form from the NRCan Non-Destructive Testing Certification Body (NDTCB).

Read the XRF examination and re-examination page for detailed information about:

  • Examination rules, regulations and process
