Project Objectives

Eavor-Loop is a fully integrated prototype closed-loop geothermal system with a novel well design and thermodynamic efficiency.

This demonstration project involves drilling, connecting, and sealing a closed loop geothermal system that consists of two vertical wells that are connected laterally at a depth of approximately 2400m. The intent of this project is to demonstrate the technical feasibility of creating a closed-loop system for geothermal systems. This project will take place utilizing sites that would not normally be viable for conventional geothermal power and/or heat production.

Expected Results

The project will test horizontal drilling and sealing techniques at significant depth adopted from Canadian expertise in oil and gas technologies to supply a sufficient heat gradient for the use for geothermal power.

Taking advantage of Canada’s oil and gas sector expertise will accelerate innovation and lead to potential new markets for Canadian experts. Geothermal power has the potential to displace fossil fuels, reducing GHG emissions and providing consistent clean power.

If successful, this closed-loop geothermal application could be applied to more sites globally, as it would not require the same site-specific resource conditions (i.e.: aquifer and higher temperature difference) as needed for a conventional geothermal power plant.

Anticipated Environmental Benefits: Geothermal power, if proven under Canadian conditions, and adopted widely in Canada, has the potential to significantly reduce GHG emissions compared to fossil fuel power generation.
