Project Objectives

Compressed air for mining operations is traditionally delivered using mechanical compressors. This project will develop an alternative through demonstration of Electrale’s hydraulic air compressor (HAC).

The HAC relies on water and gravity to compress air, reducing energy consumption up to 30% and lifecycle costs up to 50%.

This project will take the technology from industrial scale to its first commercial scale in an operating underground mine.

Expected Results

This project could become the industry-standard for compression beyond underground mining, disrupting air compression delivery, and create a Canadian centre of expertise in this technology.

Compressed air systems use 10% of energy in the industrial sector. If successful, this project could substantially reduce operating and equipment costs, thereby improving industrial economics and productivity.

It has additional benefits of safely producing higher quality air.

Anticipated Environmental Benefits: The technology is expected to consume up to 30% less energy, which has potential to reduce GHG emissions.
