This project will be a Front End Engineering Design (FEED) Study to plan a small microgrid with renewable generation to support the planned development of the Inuit owned land in Iqaluit.
The intent of this FEED study is to determine how best to power the development in Iqaluit with sustainable energy, and will eventually support and de-risk the planned demonstration project.
The FEED study will allow the proponent to determine the optimal mix of energy sources, complete initial design work, conduct any required environmental assessments, and negotiate a power-purchase agreement with the utility. Potential or anticipated system components include solar photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, battery storage, diesel combined heat and power, and microgrid control.
This project will be the first private development in Nunavut and will include residential, commercial, and social components. By exploring community-level sustainable energy, it could set a model for future community development in the north.
Anticipated Environment Benefits: the project will enable the proponent to identify the optimal approach to reduce fossil fuel use at the Inuit owned land development, resulting in lower greenhouse gas emissions, improved air quality, socioeconomic benefits for the community.
