Project Objectives
This projects objective is to modernize the Town of Parry Sound’s electricity grid to facilitate the shift towards a net-zero (carbon-neutral) smart community by using advanced grid modeling and system planning tools as well as Distributed Energy Resource Management (DERMS) for increasing visibility and control of loads and variable renewable generation.
The project will increase solar and energy storage, reduce loading on the transmission station, increase electric vehicle (EV) adoption, develop virtual net metering utilizing solar photovoltaic (PV) and water power, develop greater automation and integration within the utility environment, and develop smart residential demand management via controllable Hot Water Tanks (HWTs), EV chargers and battery storage.
Expected Results
The project will:
- Model and integrate diverse Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) controlled using a Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) to balance energy consumption and generation;
- Develop Virtual Net Metering data infrastructure to allow customers the ability to receive credit for power generated; and
- Implement a utility feeder-level microgrid using solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery storage to provide increased system resiliency.
Anticipated GHG reductions (tCO2e):
367 annually by 2030
