Management Services and International Affairs Division

On behalf of the Earth Sciences Sector (ESS), the Management Services and International Affairs Division consists of three sectoral business areas: International Affairs, Business Management, and Financial Services.

International Affairs Unit

The International Affairs Unit promotes the Earth Sciences Sector’s international strategic objectives in geomatics and geosciences around the world. As such it by developing and implementing a strategic framework for the management of the Sector’s international activities and providing strategic advice on international relations, the ESS International Affairs Unit promotes Canadian expertise internationally and contributes to the development of export markets in partnership with the private sector. To enable this objective they facilitate incoming visits from foreign delegations and coordinate and provide follow-up to the Sector’s international activities and various international projects.

Business Management Unit

The Business Management unit provides subject matter expertise and develops, coordinates, and administers policies, planning and procedures in the following areas:

  • human resources strategic planning and coordination
  • occupational health and safety training
  • program support and reporting
  • security facilities risk assessments and response
  • incidents monitoring and support
  • risk assessment and finalization of business agreements
  • advisory liaison on intellectual property issues

The Business Agreements Unit, housed within the Business Management Unit, is responsible for providing advice and support to the Sector for the development and administration of collaborative and business agreements including the appropriate use of Crown-owned and Crown-generated intellectual property.  The unit also serves as a catalyst towards the development of domestic and international business opportunities, resulting in collaborative projects, intellectual property license agreements and cost-recovery activities with both government and non-government stakeholder communities.

Financial Support Services Unit

The Financial Support Services Unit (FSS) plays a vital role within ESS along with the Sector Financial Advisors and Finance and Procurement Services.  Our services are aimed at providing sound financial advice to the ESS National Capital Offices and to represent our clients on several Committees.  FSS is the key point of contact for our clients' funds received from Other Government Departments (OGD), Special Purposes Accounts (SPA), budget transfers, financial forecasts, financial transactions (as required) and reporting.  FSS also provides specialized financial and analytical reports as required by Senior Management.
